Advancing Diversity and Inclusion at Stanford

President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell launched the university-wide Presidential Initiative IDEAL--Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in a Learning Environment--in May of 2018. Under IDEAL, design teams from across the university have developed plans related to faculty, staff, and student engagement, education and recruitment. An update on efforts to confront racial bias
Dear Stanford students,

As the end of fall quarter approaches, with the winter break close behind, we want to provide an update on issues that have been on many of our minds in recent weeks.

An important subject at Stanford this fall has been the need to confront and vigorously address incidents of racial bias and racially motivated attacks on others. There have been several of these incidents, affecting members of different communities.

I applied to medical school five years ago. (Wow, time really flies, doesn't it?). At the time, marriage equality was still being contested in the U.S. Supreme Court, and about one-third of all LGBTQ-identifying medical students reported concealing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity throughout medical school.
